GLOUCESTER
Scenes from a postcard are nothing new to residents of this coastal city. The waterfront offers a breathtaking view of a real working harbor. LOCATION
Situated on Cape Ann, just 31 miles northeast of Boston, Gloucester has managed to retain its authenticity by rejecting residential development along the water. However, a future a historic industrial fishing park is a possibility. Other neighboring cities include Manchester, Essex and Rockport. Major state highways such as 127, 128 and 133 provide easy access for travelers.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Gloucester was aptly named "Le Beauport" by Samuel de Champlain at first because of its gorgeous harbor and scenic views. This oldest seaport in America employs a diverse group of employees. The fishing fleet is manned primarily by Portuguese and Italian residents of the city.
Art lovers will love Gloucester. Long known for its spectacular pure lighting on its coast, the city is a favorite of artists. Internationally renowned painters Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Fitzhugh Lane and even sculptor Walker Hancock have called Gloucester home.
Music and theatre-goers should know that the Cape Ann Symphony is located here, as is the Gloucester Theatre Company founded by Israel Horovitz. Broadway followers will know Horovitz from his off- and on-Broadway productions.
